About

Mosswood Distillers is an independently owned and operated spirits company based in Southwest Berkeley, California, specializing in unique barrel-aged spirits crafted through specialized maturation and blending techniques. Founded by partners Therese Agnew and Jake Chevedden in 2013, the distillery bottles what they claim to be the first whiskey and rum from Berkeley, utilizing hand-selected barrels from local culinary partners, delicate hand-proofing, and minimal filtration to create nuanced spirits.

Spirits

Apple Brandy Barrel

Mosswood Whiskey aged in barrels that previously held apple brandy from Germain-Robin and Arkansas Black Applejack, offering well-balanced notes of oak, vanilla, caramel with hints of fresh citrus and baked apples.

Day Rum

A four-times distilled molasses-based light rum sourced from Puerto Rico and Florida, proofed in red wine, bourbon, and neutral barrels, displaying a subtle golden hue.

Espresso Barrel

Mosswood Whiskey finished in barrels seasoned with Bicycle Coffee Co. cold brew espresso roast, delivering notes of milk chocolate, roasted nuts, red fruits, and coffee with a subtle yet bold finish.

Night Rum

A column-distilled molasses-based dark rum from Jamaica, aged three years in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in red wine barrels from Piedrasassi Winery with deep, complex character.

Rotating Barrel

A limited release single barrel whiskey with varying seasonal finishes, currently featuring an Umeshu (Japanese plum wine) barrel aged expression with rich character.

Sour Ale Barrel

Mosswood Whiskey aged in barrels from Drake’s Brewing Co.’s Brette Davis Eyes sour ale, yielding a complex and balanced whiskey with fresh tart qualities.

UME

Plum-flavored rum using Day Rum macerated with Japanese-style ume plums from a third-generation California farmer, finished in ex-bourbon barrel with bright, tart, savory fruit qualities reminiscent of li hing mui.
